[ Ti ii ] and [ Ni ii ] emission from the strontium filament of η Carinae

چکیده
We study the nature of the [Ti ii] and [Ni ii] emission from the so-called strontium filament found in the ejecta of η Carinae . To this purpose we employ multilevel models of the Ti ii and Ni ii systems which are used to investigate the physical condition of the filament and the excitation mechanisms of the observed lines. For the Ti ii ion, for which no atomic data was previously available, we carry out ab initio calculations of radiative transition rates and electron impact excitation rate coefficients. It is found that the observed spectrum is consistent with the lines being excited in a mostly neutral region with an electron density of the order of 10 cm and a temperature around 6000 K. In analyzing three observations with different slit orientations recorded between March 2000 and November 2001 we find line ratios that change among various observations, in a way consistent with changes of up to an order of magnitude in the strength of the continuum radiation field. These changes result from different samplings of the extended filament, due to the different slit orientations used for each observation, and yield clues on the spatial extent and optical depth of the filament. The observed emission indicates a large Ti/Ni abundance ratio relative to solar abundances. It is suggested that the observed high Ti/Ni ratio in gas is caused by dust-gas fractionation processes and does not reflect the absolute Ti/Ni ratio in the ejecta of η Carinae . We study the condensation chemistry of Ti, Ni and Fe within the filament and suggest that the observed gas phase overabundance of Ti is likely the result of selective photo-evaporation of Ti-bearing grains. Some mechanisms for such a scenario are proposed.

The abundance of iron-peak elements and the dust composition in η Carinae: manganese
We study the chemical abundances of the strontium filament found in the ejecta of η Carinae. In particular, we derive the abundances of iron-peak elements from the spectra of their singly ionized ions present in the optical/infrared (IR) spectra. In this paper we analyse the spectrum of Mn II using a new non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) model for this system. In constructing this m...
متن کاملIntegral-Field Spectroscopy of the Post Red Supergiant IRC +10420: evidence for an axi-symmetric wind
We present NAOMI/OASIS adaptive-optics assisted integral-field spectroscopy of the transitional massive hypergiant IRC +10420, an extreme masslosing star apparently in the process of evolving from a Red Supergiant toward the Wolf-Rayet phase. To investigate the present-day mass-loss geometry of the star, we study the appearance of the line-emission from the inner wind as viewed when reflected o...
متن کاملOn the He II Emission In η Carinae and the Origin of Its Spectroscopic Events
We report Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of emission in η Carinae near 4680 Å, presumably He II λ4687, which are not spatially resolved from the central star. The emission was not detected in the spectrum from 1998.0 to 2003.0, or after the spectroscopic event in 2003.5. It appeared in early 2003, rapidly grew to a larger brightness than the previous authors reported, and then disapp...
متن کاملEta Carinae across the 2003.5 Minimum: Spectroscopic Evidence for Massive Binary Interactions
We have analyzed high spatial, moderate spectral resolution observations of Eta Carinae (η Car) obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) from 1998.0 to 2004.3. The data were obtained at discrete times covering an entire 2024 day spectroscopic cycle, with focus on the Xray/ionization low-state which began in 2003 June. The spectra show prominent P-Cygni lines in H I, Fe II a...
متن کاملACCRETION ONTO THE COMPANION OF ETA CARINAE DURING THE SPECTROSCOPIC EVENT: III. THE He II λ4686 LINE
We continue to explore the accretion model of the massive binary system η Car by studying the anomalously high He II λ4686 line. The line appears just before periastron and disappears immediately thereafter. Based on the He II λ4686 line emission from O-stars and their modeling in the literature, we postulate that the He II λ4686 line comes from the acceleration zone of the secondary stellar wi...
